$5 million, 100 jobs on the way at Cape Canaveral

As reported by FLORIDA TODAY staff writer Wayne T. Price and in the accompanying video by Tim Shortt Florida’s Gov. Rick Scott announced submarine missile test system for Cape Canaveral: Navy Strategic System Program at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station will refurbish, and update a submarine missile test complex built in the 1950s.

The historical station was used for manned and unmanned launches until part way through the Apollo Program

A $5 million state contribution will help create 100 federal jobs and, more importantly, secure a key component of Brevard County’s military economy for decades to come.

Approximately 85 percent of the work force will be civilian contractors, including former space shuttle workers. The facility now employs about 800 people: military, federal, and contractors.

Price also reports that the Cape Canaveral division of Lockheed Martin Space Systems will be responsible for SWS Ashore facility design and construction, along with infrastructure support.

NASA Announces Space Shuttle Replacement Shortlist

Jonathan Amos, Science Correspondent for BBC News, reports that NASA has selected three companies that will help in developing launch systems that will take us to the Space Station. This is good news for the thousands of space workers still struggling two years after the last shuttle launch.  Since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2010, American Astronauts have had to hitch rides on Russia’s Soyuz rockets at $60 million a ticket. And I thought $600 to get to Amarillo was expensive!

The companies include the SpaceX firm, aerospace giant Boeing, and the Sierra Nevada Corporation.

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, headquartered in Hawthorne, California, is a space transport company founded by former PayPal entrepreneur Elon Musk.

The Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) is considered the Top Woman Owned Federal Contractor in the United States. SNC’s center of operations is in Sparks, Nevada.

The Boeing Company of Houston, Texas, has provided space technology for NASA for years.

I was curious as to when, where, and how many people will be hired to support the space shuttle replacement. The really good news is that Boeing is supporting the Space Launch Systems (SLS) Program at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana.

I am a former Space Shuttle Program employee, as was my husband who is now 800 miles away building helicopters in Amarillo TX.

I did not view the very last launch but was fortunate enough to view the launch of STS-129 on Monday November 16, 2009. It was a stunning, aw-inspiring sight to behold.

Textron in Slidell Wins $212 Million SSC Contract

The Associated Press reported that the Navy has awarded a $212 million contract for a Textron Inc. facility in Slidell to design and build an amphibious landing craft called a “Ship-to-Shore Connector.” Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office said the contract announced Friday includes options that could make it worth as much as $570 million.

Landrieu’s office says Textron will build a boat with a 30-year service life capable of carrying a 74-ton payload and traveling at speeds of more than 35 knots.

Sen. David Vitter said the contract means “good, sustainable jobs for Louisiana.”

I worked on this contract for Textron and my husband worked on the original version; the LCAC !

Nearly 300 Jobs Coming to Pearl River, LA.

New grocery distribution center to bring nearly 300 jobs to Pearl River

As reported on WWLTV a new grocery distribution center being built in Pearl River will mean 290 new jobs, St. Tammany leaders announced Wednesday (Mouton, D, Northshore Bureau Chief, 2012). Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG) will set up shop on a 68-acre piece of property along Interstate 59.

The list of jobs, as provided by spokesperson Floyd Baker, is impressive:

30   administrative and sales jobs that will pay between $50,000 and $100,000 each
24    warehouse management jobs in the $40,000 to $90,000 range
130+ warehouse labor jobs will pay in the $30,000 to $40,000 range
20    warehouse clerical jobs ranging from $30,000 to $40,000
100  transportation and security jobs available that will be outsourced
588  construction jobs will be supported by the $75 million project

Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc. (AWG) officials told The Slidell Independent this week they hope to hold job fairs as early as August, with permanent jobs beginning by this fall (Chiri, K., Slidell News Bureau, 2011).

Can a company demand to interview your spouse?

I was researching on Monster.com and came across the strangest interview policy.

A question was posted on a Monister.com board for Job Search Tips about the interviewing policies of a company named MightyData.

One of the articles on the company blog detailed MightyData’s very extensive interview process. The blog was written by Susan Fennema, MightyData’s “Dean of Success.”

The blog talks about the steps in the interview process including; the online job application, interviewing with other team members, a technical aptitude test, a personality profile, and a reference check. However, MightyData has one last step in the interview process before a potential employee is approved to be hired;

Now get this, they conduct an In-person interview with spouses! (WHAT?) 

Here is the excerpt from the blog:

In-person interview with spouses – While I like the personality profile, this step to me is the very best. You can hear all the stories you want about separating work life from personal, blah, blah, blah. But, seriously. Are you really going to argue with me that your work doesn’t have an effect on your significant other and your significant other doesn’t have an effect on your work? That’s ludicrous. Plus, the candidate has chosen this person to be his/her most trusted life partner. It’s a good way to check your potential team member’s judgement! If the person does not have a significant other, this step is still included. It is the last step in the process and decisions are made thereafter.

I agree with Monster expert Susan Aaron’s (Career Assessment Coach) when she says WOW!

Can I add OMG! and WTF?

Seriously I had to read this paragraph several times! Does it really say;

“Are you really going to argue with me that your work doesn’t have an effect on your significant other and your significant other doesn’t have an effect on your work?”

“ the candidate has chosen this person to be his/her most trusted life partner. It’s a good way to check your potential team member’s judgement!”
